03:00:31 PM
We will start in about 1 minute
For those of you joining us today, we're going to start in about 1 minute.
That was loud.
What?
Yes.
There we go, you worried you worried me from over there.
Yeah, I don't know what's going on with spectrum is like twice a day, it just goes out completely and so I had to just reload everything, sorry.
Oh yeah, no problem. Alright, let's let's get started.
Thank you for those of us who are joining us today. Welcome to the University of Alabama live question and answer session for University of Alabama engineering and Business School applicants.
We are thrilled by the responses we've received and look forward to answering all of your questions as thoroughly and transparently as we can.
Uh, the University is committed to providing the best possible support and services to all students in applicants, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. During these uncertain times times we remain what we just drive to work flexibly and work with you as needed. And as the situation develops.
So the University is here today to help respond to your questions about the University of Alabama.
And we're going to address some of those questions during our short presentation, and then we'll open up the floor for questions.
So.
Before we get started, I want to introduce our panel so Viola, a cough is the associate Dean for undergraduate and graduate programs and a professor in the Department of metallurgical and materials engineering.
Uh, can Fridley cannot join us today? Uh Oh Huebner is a professor and program graduate program coordinator and in a Department of aerospace engineering mechanics. Jan Jones will hopefully be joining us shortly from the Business School and then myself. My name is Andrew Goodliffe, I'm associate Dean in the Graduate School.
Sir.
So as just tell you how this is going to work, we're going to have a short presentation and then at the end of that presentation we will say we will open up the floor for questions. So please do hold any questions until we actually reach that part of the presentation and at that time I'll ask you to put your questions into the chat box. So first though.
I am gonna hand the virtual podium to Doctor Viola, a cough. Who will tell you a little bit about why you, a especially from the engineering point of view.
Yes, thank you and Good afternoon. We're so happy to have you join us and we definitely look forward to having each of you join us in your respective program of choice for graduate studies.
The College of engineering we offer nine different Masters degrees in all the different areas of airspace, chemical, civil, computer, science, Electrical Engineering.
Engineers size mechanics, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering and metallurgical engineering. We have Seven departments at each of the departments offer a PhD degree. So we have Seven PhD degrees that are offered through each of the department's and then we have an eighth PhD degree that is, try campuses with our campus University of Alabama, Huntsville in UA B for the material science and so you can have your home Department at any of those so.
Those are the degrees that we offered. The programs we have. Faculty who are leaders in research in a number of areas that we refer to this driving innovation not just for the college or University, but also for the nation. These particular areas are advanced vehicle components and systems, clean combustion performance, materials, resilient infrastructure, transportation and water resources, size and policy. But if you go to each of the different departments.
There are very, uh, a large number of different topics within each of the departments that you can actually do research on, and that is very professor specific, and so if you're going to do a research project, I suggested you contact one of the faculty in any of the departments that you may have some interest in, and they're fully outline on our website.
We have nearly 150 faculty in our College of Engineering, an about 1,000,000 square feet of space for facilities. That is strictly engineering and a number of faculty that do. The chefs shared facilities within the college, so you may have a faculty from aerospace engineering and a faculty for mechanical engineering and a faculty from electric engineering all sharing the same laboratory facility, and so that gives you a greater breadth of knowledge to have.
Expertise from those different areas. Some of our laboratories that just want to highlight we have a cube. I think some of you who are undergraduate you may have worked in the cube. There's a, they say, a workspace or innovation lab. We have a win, an water tunnels. We have welding facilities. We have engines, conduction and large scale structures just to name a few. And last but certainly not least, we have a number of.
Companies that we actually do a partners with an A number of these projects are particularly once for industry are geared a lot towards master students. Could there usually a quicker turn around and those sorts of companies like Boeing, Caterpillar, Mercedes and such? But then faculty also have research projects from agencies like the National Science Foundation, Years Department Defense Department.
Energies and those are you a little bit longer term, which are more desirable for a PhD student, so I'll be here for the rest of the hour. You have anymore questions. For anything else send up. I'll just jump right in.
Alright thank you doctor. Takeoff, uh, I'm going to jump in here and talk a little bit about the Business School so our Business School has many highly ranked programs, so things like accounts and see our top 10 in the program in the country. Marketing is a Top 20 program finances top 30 and then we have our MBA which is ranked 27th in most public universities so.
It's a, It's a great a college, uh?
In terms of the sorts of seat degrees you can do, they have a number of one year specialized Masters programs. So for example, if we look at marketing, finance, accountancy, operations management, these will one year programs. So in fact all of the Masters programs, with the exception of the MBA. Our one year programs. Of course they do have the MBA program which is taught on campus and that is a two year program.
There's a regular MBA and it's also an executive MBA for those who have Seven or more years of industry experience.
Uh, In addition to the Masters programs, they also have very strong PhD programs, so PhD is in areas such as marketing, management, operations management, economics, finance, etc. So they have a great suite of programs, great, sweeter faculty and they have some great facilities as well. So things like the business Analytics Center is very well known, very well equipped.
And they have some wonderful alumni are people like Marilyn Houston who is the CEO of Lockheed Martin Jimmy Wales? Who is the founder of Wikipedia. Both of those graduated from the University of Alabama and those are just two examples out of many.
Alright, I'm going to move on and talk a little bit about some COVID-19 specific issues or points.
So, uh.
One of the key things that we've done during the COVID-19 crisis is many of our programs. Most of our programs, in fact have weights. The Jirari and Gmat or MIT requirement, and so this applies to.
Summer and fall admission. So we do know that during this time it's hard to take these tests. There are tests jirari tests that you can take.
At home, but they have very limited availability and then not available in all countries. We also appreciate that it costs a lot of money to take these tests and during this time many people, many of our applicants have lost jobs and so don't have the money available. So we do hope that this concession on our part does provide some help to you.
Uh, right now. Or actually we just finished our spring semester last half of our spring semester was taught online.
Following spring break.
We do know that the first summer session is being taught online. Uh, I don't think there's a final decision about the second summer session, but you, a University of Alabama, has announced that we intend on teaching the fall semester on campus.
Of course, this is subject to health guidelines and I do want to point out that one of the best research schools, one of the best medical research schools in the country is our sister school, the University of Alabama, Birmingham. So we have some of the best minds in the world advising us on these health related issues.
Uh.
If you are applying to welcome, see you are applying to grad school, the entire process is online, so we have not been in any way slowed down by moving to working from home, we are moving forward with processing applications at the same rate and actually faster than we were before.
So we've actually been getting a big surgeon application, so applications team has been doing a wonderful job.
One very common question we get is about funding. We've heard that lots of schools are cancelling funding offers that they've made to admitted students. We are not doing this are Provost has stated that a priority is the funding of our students, and so if you do have an offer of funding, there is no no intention right now to take away that offer. Funding your funding is secure.
Alright, I want to move on to some admissions related points.
So.
Andrew Goodliffe

a. https://graduate.ua.edu/prospective-students/apply-now/
If you haven't already applied, you can apply to the Graduate School at graduate.ua.edu, and I'm going to put in a HTML link in the chat window, which hopefully you can see.
So that is the link that you will use to apply. As I mentioned, the whole process processes online and also we do not need official documents, official transcripts, official test scores during the application process. We only need you to upload copies of your documents, so hopefully again that does help.
Now, once complete, if you're admitted, we would require official documents.
Andrew Goodliffe
03:15:09 PM
https://gradservice.ua.edu/admin/programs.aspx?type=ache
Now with the applications once an application is complete once we've got everything we need those applications get sent to the department's for review and we get lots of questions about things like how long is it going to take to review an application and one of the things will do at that point is typically refer refer you out to the graduate program director and the link that I've just put in the chat window.
Is a listing of all of our graduate programs including program requirements and also the contact for the program directors so when it comes to time to looking at?
Uh individual program requirements that sort of thing program director is really the person to speak to they're going to know the most they're going to be able to tell you the details that Graduate School is not going to be able to.
Uh.
In general how long does it take to get a permission decision it again it's going to vary by Department some Department can turn around decisions in a few days for others it will take a couple of weeks to a month I began asking the program director.
Uh, I do want to let you know that admission is open to everyone from all backgrounds, from all countries.
When we're looking at admitting students, the background of student is irrelevant. We're looking for admitting the best students, so we want we want you to apply. We want those really good students to come here.
Uh, there's been a few questions about if you rejected is an appeal process, there is an appeal process.
Andrew Goodliffe
03:16:39 PM
amg@ua.edu
I can actually tell you more about that over email and I just put my email address in the chat window.
And then a few students are also concerned about what happens if the program is full because we have been getting a lot of applications and we have had some of our programs fill already in that case contacting the program directed to see if there are options to move your application to another semester is certainly possible.
We've also had a lot of concern form international applicants who are worried about getting student visa now we're very aware that embassies in a lot of countries are currently closed and we're keeping very close eye on that and we really do hope that those embassies do open up as quickly as possible.
Our biggest advice to people who are in the application pipeline right now is well we really hope that you can get a decision as soon as possible and that we can get your I 20 that you require for the visa into your hands as quickly as possible one of the things we are doing right now is we are emailing I twenties 2 applicants just so you do have a copy of that so that when the embassy opens you have everything you need.
Uh to get that visa as quickly as possible.
Uh, there have been some questions about how long it takes to finish a degree. Well, that's that's a big question.
Uh, we do have one and two year Masters degrees both in engineering and in the Business School.
Typically a one year degree does not include a thesis, so it's a coursework based Masters degree. So you have that option then. We've also got the two year option for the thesis based degree, and I think it's probably fair to say that most people in engineering opt for the opt for the two year degree doctor huebner is that. Does that seem like a fair comment?
OK.
Cilantro.
Alright, thank you. Uh, now of course, once it gets the pH DS, that's again a much bigger question. We have truly exceptional students who can finish their degrees in their pH DS in three or four years. Some may take much longer. Doctor huebner. Do you have an idea so for your program? But how long to PhD take?
Yeah.
Now we also had some questions about funding, and obviously this is going to be specific for engineering.
The first part of the question, what is the best way to find out about funding getting saying assistantship or scholarship of some sort?
I'll start and I'll let Doctor Huebner.
Chime in with some more information. I would say if there's a faculty member that you interested particularly for research, because if it's going to be a research assistantship here would be paid from a faculties research grant. Obviously reach out to that faculty member and let them know that you're interested. Uh, number department's also offer teaching assistantships an those are primarily for our new faculty for use for the new faculty startup. But then there are some.
Others that we have for, like a freshman engineering program, we have a few teaching assistantships with that, and that could be any student for that, so that's part of an out turned over to my colleague Doctor Kutner For more information.
Jan Jones
03:22:37 PM
Andy, I am having computer issues....this is Jan
Andrew Goodliffe
03:23:01 PM
Sorry
And doctor remember another get contact is the graduate coordinator in Equilibre Apartments. You could reach out to him. More than likely the graduate coordinator would know if there's probably looking to hire a student, so that's another way where you don't have to just send a blanket email to all the faculty. That's just one point of contact and they can help you with that.
I'm sorry.
All right, we've just been joined by Jan Jones from the Business School. Thank you for joining us, Jan.
So we actually have a question about funding how students can find out about funding, and so doctor a cough and doctor huebner answered this from the engineering point of view as running. If you could tackle that from the Business School side.
Just from any of the Masters programs or we talkin to doctoral students as well, or?
Probably total as well.
OK, well the doctoral programs are fully funded.
So that that's, you know that's an automatic for the Masters programs for Specialized Masters. It's going to depend on what may or may not be left after we have all our doctoral students in place for the MBA program. They have some and it's normally based on one year assistantships, so those are. They could be 10 hours or 20 hours fully funded, or have funded. But each one of the specialized Masters is more departmental.
So say you wanted a marketing Masters degree, then you would apply if admitted then they would look at the big picture and they would make some scholarship assignments based on that. But to be honest, it's quite limited for the Masters degree an it's just a year to year decision.
Alright thank you thank you uh that I did have a specific engineering funding question in engineering is it possible to get an assistantship without finding an initial advisor.
That is correct.
Sunday.
So we had double college get a certain amount of funds forward. A graduate teaching assistantships and we are attending to use consists of a big push for PhD graduates in our college. We are focusing those resources on primarily PhD. An again research assistantships it this from a research Grant. Those are more aligned for PhD because.

Academic Calendar: a. https://registrar.ua.edu/academiccalendar/
Andrew Goodliffe
03:26:52 PM
Tuition: https://studentaccounts.ua.edu/tuition-rates/
Those are like three to four years of a fondue. For those those grants, so it takes a little bit longer term. However, reach out to the faculty. I know some particularly like civil engineering. They tend to have more Masters students then PhD students and a number of their funding is geared towards funding a master student. So is a lot time is very Department specific, and so I just say just reach out again to the graduate coordinator and they would be the.
Point of contact you directly accordingly.
So there are also a couple of questions about when the semester starts and about tuition as well, so I've just put 2 links into the chat window which hopefully our participants will be able to see and hopefully that will help.
General question about our graduate classes on the same schedule as the rest of the University and the answer to that is, is yes.
So let's shift gears a little bit and talk about campus life.
So.
One of the things I want to emphasize is we really do look forward to joining us on our beautiful campus. We're very proud of our campus.
Uh, once you get here, there's lots to do outside of academia. We obviously want you to work hard, but we'd like you to play hard as well. People who work and play hard do best.
So lots of things to do in terms of athletics. Student clubs for everyone. All that sort of thing.
There were some specific questions about health insurance, so one of them related to is the health insurance, enough to cover medical expenses. There's really not a great answer to that.
You know, if if unless you have major medical issues, it will cover cover most things, but there will be what we call a Co pay.
Oh
Andrew Goodliffe
03:28:37 PM
a. https://housing.sa.ua.edu/transfer-and-graduate-students/
We had questions about housing and so I'm going to put a couple of links up about housing so we do have some graduate student housing on campus. I do want you, it is expensive. It's very, very nice, but it is very expensive and so the link I just put up is for on campus housing.
By far, the majority of students.
Andrew Goodliffe
03:28:54 PM
b. https://offcampushousing.sa.ua.edu
Go off campus and we do have an off campus housing office.
Advertise a lot of the apartment complex is there is a huge range of housing options on campus. There is something for every budget from very cheap too. Very very expensive.
So do look around and probably one of the best ways to find housing is to contact the graduate program director of your future program and see if they can put you in touch with students. Also, if you go to our Graduate School webpage, we list some of our graduate ambassadors, and so those are the sorts of folks who can answer questions about housing. Do you want to say we have a good bus service on campus and that?
Bus service does extend extend to some of the off campus housing.
Andrew Goodliffe

And then also, as you're getting ready to think about coming to our campus, I do want to share the address of our virtual tour. We have a very good virtual tour and that YouTube address I just put into the chat link.
Tells you a little bit why she that's the direct link to the virtual tool.
OK, so I've been talking a lot, uh?
Mohammad M.
03:30:39 PM
Is there any GRA position available now for PhD student in Civil Engineering (structural engineering)?
Let's go on to some questions from the audience so at this time this is where you can put in some questions I do see that we've got some come in already so I'm going to review these Emily since the panel so just one second.
So I just released one other. Any GA positions available now for PhD students in civil engineering so I don't have doctor egg often doctor Huebner you might be.
Be able to address that. I know that's not your Department.
That was the question again.
I'll take a question again. I'll take a shot at it.
Yes.
So the question should have come up on your chat window. Are there any G available after any GA GRA positions available now for yeah.
OK, and I'm sorry again. I say contact the graduate coordinator. Does doctor Mike Krieger? Uh, he would know that does anything that's controlled by that apartment. The Department would know, so that would be your best point of contact.
Alright, and I'm just finding his email address so I can put it in the chat window.
So I just want second.
Alright, hold on.
Andrew Goodliffe
03:31:58 PM
Kreger, Michael: mekreger@eng.ua.edu
All right, so the graduate program director for Civil Engineering. His email address is now in the chat window.
So in terms of questions, don't be shy when asking questions. This is your chance to get answers from a panel of experts and and me.
So you know anything related to admissions you life on campus, uh, different programs not I attempted to answer some of the questions of being submitted ahead of time during during my talk, but I'm sure I did miss some.
Oh
Excellent, I'm glad I can be of service there.
Yeah.
So, so, uh, jenn, uh, at the start of the talk.
A Viola talked a little bit about why the College of engineering and I attempted to do that for the Business School, but I'm sure I didn't do the best job. Maybe, maybe you can tell folks a little bit about the Business School.
Mehran G.
03:33:33 PM
I have already submitted my questions. Do I need to write them again?
Sure, I hate I missed it and I hope I'm not rid done done. I'm not sure exactly who signed up, but we do have 10 specialized Masters degrees at the College of business and we have an MBA all. And that's predominantly what I can talk about. We also have some PhD programs, but not in every discipline. Why the College of business well?
It's, uh, it's
Andrew Goodliffe
03:33:52 PM
Please do re-submit your question
We have our own Mandersson Graduate School of business, so you have your own support staff.
There are myself in about 10 others that are focused slowly. I'm sorry only on the graduate students. We have our own corporate career Services Department. We start working with you this summer before you get here on career prep to the whole business thing. The resume, the mock interviews the professional development which is a big part of the business college.
As a graduate student, we know that that's with the brightest and you're smart, so we work strongly on the soft skills and getting you ready for the corporate world I could tell you a little. We have great degrees. We have the Mac with the MTA with the all new business Analytics, the all new management information systems, and we're bringing back the MA Management on campus with the E con, the finance, the marketing.
Brandi C.
03:35:00 PM
Is the Graduate School admissions team working full time remotely? How is COVID-19 delaying the admissions process?
And the OM and applied stats that was already there. We pretty much have everything, and I think one thing and you probably you probably said this handy. But I think what the beauty of the business colleges other than accounting you don't need a business degree for our Masters programs. In fact Econ Finance that's or strong math backgrounds really loved.
Want to step on any toes with the engineering over there but you have OM and finance an applied stats and business Analytics that loves engineering students, so it's a good mix and it there's a lot a lot of things going on all at the same time. And when your programs.
You did it.
Did I it?
You did you did it?
Yeah, well, that's what I do for a living and I only have to focus on one so.
Thank you.
Yeah you did a much better job than I did thank you.
So, uh, there was a question from one of our participants. Is the grad school admission missions team working full-time remotely? So yes, we are working full-time remotely, and we're actually probably working more than full time remotely. So very, very busy time.
So really, there's.
The the only reason we have need delays in the admissions process right now is because we have an unprecedented unpresidented. We have an unusually large volume of applications coming in, so that is what's really delaying is right now.
Andrew Goodliffe

https://graduate.ua.edu/contact-us/
But if you do have questions about your application, you know hearing back from us, we do have a contact us link on the Graduate School web page that is by far the best way to contact us if you reach out to any of our individual emails. Right now your email may get buried, so this is the contact as link. I just put it in the chat page.
And if it is something about the application being reviewed in the Department.
That graduate program director is the best person to talk too. So once once an application is released for review by the Department.
Andrew Goodliffe

The process is sort of out of the graduate schools hands at that time, and I'm just going to put the link to the graduate program director Contacts again in the chat window, 'cause I know it's scrolled up towards the top now.
So you do reach out to us.
Uh, let's see we got some more.
And it can I add something.
Oh sure, please.

Does the new quick admit program apply to transfer students?
Mehran G.
03:37:51 PM
how can I waive my English requirement?
Nnamdi N.
03:37:55 PM
Do I still stand a chance of being admitted this fall 2020? I haven't received any decision since I completed my application in December 2019
It's a really smooth process if the students make sure that they have everything ready when they do the application statement of purpose I'm not sure about the College of engineering but any kind of supplemental documents that they may need that normally is what can hold up an application because the Graduate School has to make sure all the pieces of the puzzle or there before they can get it to us.
Yeah.
I I think I'm I'm confident the engineering is the same way. Once we get one, our faculty are going to do their best to review it as quickly as they can and get you an answer. But a lot of times the hold up is not the Graduate School or the college. It's the student, maybe forgot the statement of purpose and they didn't even realize it. So just make sure they have everything submitted an there's checklist when you apply, so make sure you follow the checklist and then it's. It's a smooth process.
Yeah, and I do want to add that both the Business School in the College of engineering by far the best at processing applications in a timely fashion. There's. There's no, there's no challenge there.
Yeah, it's a work in progress.
We had a question from Peyton Peyton was asking if the new quick admit process applies to transfer students. Unfortunately that does not apply to transfer students. It's only two current UA seniors so, but that doesn't mean you can't apply. You can still apply. Get the application in and you say we are trying to process those applications as quickly as possible.
Uh, we had a student who asked about waiving the English requirement, so that is going to depend a lot on what country you're coming from. So we actually just unveiled a new policy on English requirements where we do waive the English requirement for a lot of different countries now.
However, if the issue is, we do need the English test and you can't get somewhere to take that test.
Andrew Goodliffe
03:40:12 PM
Duolingo
We are currently accepting Duolingo for most for most departments, and so I'm just going to spell that out on the chat window.
And so Duolingo is a test that you can take very easily online in your own home. And another big advantage of this over the Toefl or Ielts is that it is much, much cheaper. So that is a big selling point.
Uh, another?
Yet no student has asked, do I still stand a chance of being admitted for this fall, uh.
The student hasn't received a decision yet, uh?
Andrew Goodliffe
03:40:57 PM
amg@ua.edu
This this will depend. This will depend on the Department and so if you can send me a send me an email at amgua.edu, just put that in the chat window. I can work on this for you. 1 on one.
Uh.
Sure, please.
Mehran G.
03:41:17 PM
how can I waive my English requirement? I have some journal papers and reviews in some international journals.
Peyton K.
03:41:26 PM
Since the quick admit does not apply to transfers, does this mean there will be less transfers accepted for the fall term?
Alright, thank you, that's very useful. Uh, we did have a clarification on the English requirement. This particular student has Journal papers and reviews in some international journals. Now, if a student is asking for a waiver of the English requirement, if you do have.
Uh.
Journal articles published in peer reviewed journals. That does make it more likely that will consider waiving the English requirement. So in this particular case, what I'd advise you to do is reach out to Maine, put my email address in the chat window, and we can talk further about that.
Related to the quick admits and transfer's, does this mean they'll be less transfers accepted for the full term? So by transfer I see me just mean you are coming from another University. It depends on capacity. I know some of our programs are actually considering adding extra capacity because we hate to turn down students who would like to enroll on our campus, especially right now when we can really help you.
Uh, move your career on to that next step. Once the financial crisis.
Moves away so, uh, you know, please do still put your application in so don't don't let that stop you.
Alfredo G.
03:44:04 PM
I'm a bit nervous about going online vs. on site in MS mech. eng. not because of the content, but because I feel as if I'm missing on some aspects, such as career advices, or personal pro-to-rookie advice. what's your take on it?
All right, uh, doctor Huebner. Even though this one is a mechanical engineering, I think, uh, given that, uh, I am also has an online program. You might be able to address this.
So the question is, I'm a bit nervous about going online versus on site in the MSN mechanical engineering, not because of the content, but because I feel as though I'm missing some aspects such as career advice, personal pro in.
Device what's your take on this?
Thank you, thank you.
One thing I wanted to add about mechanic Engineering is stopped up there, said there on line Masters program is is fairly new, just a couple of years but they had a very vibrant undergraduate distance program and so so there are accustomed to dealing with students and so they're very proactive with the students. But again, it won't be the same as on campus, but they do have quite a bit of experience from their Masters.
I'm sorry for deer on Line Bachelors degree program.
So.
OK.
So so Jen. The Business School has a lot of online programs. Do you have any sort of insight things to share about online versus on campus?
Hum.
Not a whole lot more to add. I think they put it very well. It's the same. We have the OEM did marketing and the MA Management that's ranked 10th by US news and World Report which is really a strong ranking 'cause we go head to head with a lot of your big name school, Stanford, Purdue. So I think we're experiencing the same thing. It's part time, works well for the working student or if you have a family.
One or two classes at a time. The technology is there. Of course. You might miss some of the personal contact like the question asked, but you're able to get it done while you're still working. So no matter if it's Engineering, Business, College Education, whatever. It is a graduate degree online.
Is a very good fit for someone who can't actually like put their life on hold and want to get that graduate degree. In fact, I'm supposed to be graduating tomorrow, but I will wait and I will walk in August.
And I did it on line. It it it it's it's good, they're they're good programs and you guys are so savvy technology computer you get this.
Really.
Professors do a really good job. CCS, which is the administrative side. Abama by distance does a really good job in developing the online delivery. If you can't, we would love to have you here. You would love to be here. It's a beautiful day here, by the way, but if you can't do that, we still would like you to be an alumni of the University and I think it bears mentioning that neither the transcripts the diploma we consider the degree to be the same.
So there's no indication anywhere that it was a bahma by distance degree. You're a UA alumni, regardless if you got the degree online or in the brick and mortar.
And students have access to all the same career services or that sort of thing.
Absolutely.
Yeah.

Hi, I applied for the rolling admission for MS Civil engineering. When will I get a decision from the department?
So that.
I like doing this with the engineering folks. My daughter was aerospace.
Excellent, excellent.
2004
She actually is it with the stem NBA group now.
As a.
So.
She did the NBA, yeah?

Kreger, Michael: mekreger@eng.ua.edu
So we had a question come in about admission to civil engineering. Uh, reach out to me about that and I'll actually if I scroll further up the email address for the Civil Engineering Program Directory is there. So I'm going to put that in the chat again. So please reach out to him and he'll be able to help you on finding out when you'll get a decision.
Let's see, the question seemed to have slowed coming in.
So I think what we're gonna do is will wrap this up in about a minute and less any other questions come in so.
Let me just put a note on the chat.
Andrew Goodliffe

Wrapping up in about a minute
Andy, I really hate on this. The first part if you want to put my email up there, that's fine.
Yeah, let me grab that quickly.
It just Jay Jones.
Thank you.

All right?
Yeah, so all of us love talking to perspective students and for Jan she is the director of recruitment for the specialized Masters program. So quite literally that is her job and she's very very good at it.
Well, thank you.
And the colleges in engineering and I think business college works well together, which was so fun to do this. I'm sorry I was a little late to the party.
But it's good to see y'all.
Same here.
Well, what?
Yeah.
Yes.
I know that's what my daughter did. Aerospace in NBA was a really good fit. Annum. I'll tell you what you can't beat this engineering undergrads there. They are great students.

03:52:10 PM
Are there class size limits in the distance only programs?
Hudson N.
03:52:12 PM
Are students automatically considered for scholarships/funding/assistantships? Or is it a seperate application?
Francis D.
03:52:16 PM
Talking about online degrees, you do have the PhD in aerospace, are you going to start anything on applied stats PhD?
We left it to have them come over, but not if they have a passion for engineering. But if they need something else, alittle business background but they are the brightest and great students.

Is it possible to enrol for a double master after being admitted?
Alright, well telling people that things were finishing up. There was a whole bunch of questions just came in, so let's see if we can tackle some of these.
Uh, hang on when it goes wrong window there.
I want to say one while you're reading them. OK Andy, it kind of goes with one of the questions. Don't get locked into thinking assistantships are only from the Department you're admitted as well.
Good point, good point.
Because we were, We were just talking about my daughter and y'all had to listen but she worked for the Dean of students. One year in the NBA program as an assistant and actually work for the Dean of Engineering. One year, the second year of her MBA program as a full assistantship. We've had marketing students get hired by the College of Nursing, 'cause they were redoing their marketing materials and they wanted a grad student. So right now we're in unprecedented times. But when the job line gets up
I think it's jobs.ua.edu backslash students. Look for assistantships. You might find something that you enjoy that's not even in engineering or business. It may be.
Yeah.
Over at Russell Health, who knows, but that's not something and and they paid the same or at the grad school.
Yeah, we we have graduate assistants working in the grad school. Uh, actually just found that link for you, a student job site? Hold on.
Uh.
Andrew Goodliffe

Yeah, this this one takes you straight to it, so you a student jobs.ua.edu.
But you know specifically to answer that question. For most Department students are automatically considered.
For assistantships is not really a separate application, though some do have a separate application.
Uh.
Doctor Huebner, there's one directly for you. Do you have a PhD in aerospace?
Stephanie A.
03:54:42 PM
did your daughter have to apply for those positions? Or automatically accepted?
Yeah, we don't have any online PhD programs and I don't have any knowledge of of having in any in the future, not even building on the three Masters programs we have.
Not at the time. Not at this time.
Oh yay.
So Jen, there was a question specifically for you did you did? Did your daughter have to apply for those assistantship positions?
That's a good question. 'cause since I work out here, you probably thought I had insider information. No, I I had her go to the job line and she had to apply for them and they they interviewed quite a few when it was for the Dean of students. Now the Dean of engineering came looking for her because she was an engineering undergrad, knew she was in an MBA program for something he was he was doing actually is about females in engineering. So I was pulling some reports. But No, she had to apply for him. She would just fortunate that her mother knew to to tell her too. But we're telling you too.
Yeah, exactly.
So you're getting insider information by joining us today.
So Stephane also asked the question, is it possible to involve in 2 Masters degrees, yeah.
Uh, that's your daughter did, isn't it?
Yeah.
No she didn't, but we do have it. We have a dual NBA mechanical I think.
Brandi C.
03:57:44 PM
Is there a cap on the business online MS programs?
Oh yeah, yeah.
Wait wait wait.
Yeah, I think what they're what we're trying to say is, if it's already a prove dual enrolled program, then Yes, absolutely you can. If it's not because we have the MBA, JD, can you be like they may be asking? Can you be enrolled in economics and marketing?
Where there's not a dual enrollment program, so I'm confused if the student wants to know is it too if they can enroll in two separate programs at the same time? Or are they only interested in the dual enrollment which like he just said, has its advantages 'cause the electives in certain things can double count? But can they? I don't know Andy, can they be in two different Masters programs at the same time?
They can. They can typically. What would tell them is to get permission from the graduate program director. Just because the volume of work may be optimistic.
But yeah, we have plenty of students who are in two separate programs are official jewel programs.
Uh, let's see there was.
So one question about, uh, their caps on the business, an online Ms programs in terms of involvement.
No, absolutely not.
Are cool.
Excellent, excellent.
Yeah, we we anyone you if you're admitted and you and you're in the program, you get the courses we do not put a capacity limit on our online.
Alright, well with that I think uh, questions have truly dried up and it is coming up to 4:00 o'clock, so I do want to thank all the attendees for coming along. and I do want to thank our panelists as well for participating this Friday afternoon on such a beautiful day.
So thank you so much. Thank you everyone and have a great day. And remember Roll Tide.
Roll Tide, y'all.
Thank you.
Hi.
