GRAD Connect New Student Q&A: Engineering
And once it does go to zero I'll give them a sort of a minute before we start or 2 minutes.
There we go.
The numbers going up now.
Alright panel members you should be able to see the participants joining now.
Yes.
Like we got folks joining from all over the place.
Andrew Goodliffe
03:00:49 PM
We will be starting in 2 minutes. Thank you fo joining us today
So for those of you just joining us will be starting in about 2 minutes and you should see that in the chat box or so.
OK let's get started I want you to want to welcome you all to the University of Alabama live Q&A for city of Alabama College of engineering admitted students.
We are thrilled by the responses we've received and look forward to answering your questions today.
The University of Alabama is committed to providing the best possible support and services to all students especially during the Cove in 19 crisis.
Journeys uncertain times we work hard to remain flexible as the situation develops.
Today members of the College of engineering and Graduate School teams are here to respond.
To your questions about the University of Alabama we hope to attach your concerns transparently and thoroughly.
Before we begin I want to introduce the panel.
So we have a number of panel members first is Viola take off who is associate Dean for undergraduate and graduate programs and a professor in the Department of metallurgical and materials engineering.
We then have Ken Fridley who is the senior associate Dean for administration and also a professor in the Department of civil construction and environmental engineering.
We then have Steve Shepherd who is a professor an associate Department head and director of graduate programs for the Department of mechanical engineering.
And then Pokémon professor and graduate program coordinator for the Department of aerospace engineering and mechanics and last but probably least myself and you're good left associate Dean for the Graduate School and in my role I'm responsible for admissions recruitment and fellowships.
Before we start a little housekeeping we're going to go through a small number of slides.
These slides will give an overview of some important points at what I've done is I focused these around the questions that have been asked by the participants are ahead of this of this web and R.
And then once we get to the Q&A session we're going to open the floor for other questions and it's only at that time that will accept questions from the participants the key is don't be shy though when it comes time to.
Asking those questions.
Alright so the first slide that we have is why the UA College of engineering doctor a cough.
Yes, I like to say Good afternoon to everyone. We're so glad to have you participating in this Q&A. first I just want to tell you a little bit about the Tuscaloosa community. It is that the universe of Alabama is located in the city of Tuscaloosa. An Tuscaloosa consists of a community of about 150,000 residents, is very rich in culture, also number different, educational and Athletic.
Activities for a broad range of lifestyles. The downtown area has been revitalized to have a number of different restaurants and other entertainment venues, and the universities also bordered by a River and this riverfront area has been developed consist of biking trails, walking trails and a number of different other outdoor activities.
We offered the cause of Engineering 9 Masters degrees and uh, we can have. You can major in aerospace engineering and chemical civil air science engineering, electrical engineering, engineering, science, mechanics rather environment engineering, McCain, metallurgical and we also have a PhD programs. The only one that is does not duplicated for the PhD program is to environmental engineering that is.
Only in Masters Degree program with that one, and we also have a PhD program in material science. Our faculty are very active in a number of different research areas sent in there actually are. Faculty is actually not only active in his research areas that actually leaders in in driving innovation in a number of particular areas. Summer just to highlight are the advanced vehicle component systems.
Uh, infrastructure transportation water research clean combustion performance.
And so those are just the The High Level 30,000 level areas. But you Windows 7 different departments there specific programs that you can get. You can actually major an assessment as far as research is concerned. There for other areas that you can also major in or or do research in an ice objects that you contact that department's graduate coordinator and they could provide you with more information for Pacific's.
We are very proud of our facilities. We have nearly 1,000,000 square feet of research facilities in. This is very Berry new and state of the art. We have West called the engineering and science. Curtis Shelby Engineering side squad that makes up the heart of the College of engineering. We have a number of different shared facilities, laboratories and such in. Again we can provide more information on that.
Just to highlight some, we have the cube which is an open source Innovation Laboratory. We have welding and joining. We have wind and water tunnels, large scale structures, uh, centre analytical facilities, uhm I mean you name it engine components, we have it.
In a number of faculty are also associated with a number of different research centers. Come are specific to the college. Some go cross the campus, and some faculty are also involved in one of the major three University wide research thrusts, which is the Alabama Border Institute. Alabama Transportation Institute in the Alabama life research. And finally, before I turn it back over to my colleagues, we also do.
Research with a number of industry. We have a number of research partners In addition to um industries such as Boeing for Caterpillar. Mercedes is such a number of faculty. Also have research funded by a number of different agencies, such as the National Science Foundation, National Institution of Health, Department of Defense, that rent Department transportation and such. So would love to have you. That's just a little bit of brief overview, and we can actually get a little bit more specifics later on.
Alright thank you very much doctor a cough.
So.
And I'm sure that many of you have lots of questions about what's happening at the University of Alabama around the Cove in 19 crisis so obviously we are adapting to what is our new normal.
A number of things that we have done is the College of engineering is participating in our new test score waiver program so if there are any of you there who have not applied yet we are waving test scores currently for the summer and fall semesters also for those of you who don't have English as a first language we are also accepting the Duolingo English test right now which can be easily taken at home.
In terms of what's happening on campus spring 2020 the current semester is currently being taught remotely online we do know that the summer semester at least the first half of the summer first half of the summer is going to be taught online.
We're still finalizing plans for the fall of as soon as we do know something we will communicate that out to our applicants our hope is really that we are going to be teaching in person but it all depends on many many different variables many of which are out of our control.
So you know really watch this space and as soon as we do know anything for sure we will be communicating with our applicants and admitted students.
Of some questions that have come in from the registered students is will the fall semester start at the plans time.
We are dealing with a number of different options and so far none of those involved delaying the start of semester however things can change but right now we are planning to start the semester on time.
One question that we're getting a lot for in from international students is if classes are taught online in the fall can you enroll from your home country and the short answer to that is yes.
Now of course you know this may be difficult with some of the practice with practical nature of some of the engineering classes but as faculty again we're all adjusting to this not knew normal and finding novel ways to do things.
Of and then another common question is if I choose 2 can I defer to spring 2021 that is certainly an option or so but again we do hope that you can enroll in the fall.
Uh you know this will become clearer as you know hopefully in the next couple of weeks.
Uh some other questions we've had.
Uh if I defer is my offer of funding secure.
Book.
Now this is really something where you've got to stay in contact with your perspective advisor and with the graduate program director and this is going to be a something that we.
We say over and over again it's very important that you're in contact with the graduate program director in fact the last slide of this presentation is going to be the contact information for the graduate program directores.
Uh just so that you can keep up with the latest information.
I think you.
The good news is that as a University we're not talking about cutting funding to students now many of you may be aware that there are other universities out there that are cutting funding to students are leadership is very much stated that funding for students is the number one priority.
One question I can directly address because I'm the person that administers the fellowship's is if you have a fellowship how will that work if classes are online and you're working from home whether that's in the US or outside the US.
With our fellowships we plan to award those as normal even for students who are working online at their home wherever that may be.
Then another common question is.
Students who can't get unofficial documents from their universities because the universities are closed or have limited business operations.
Hello.
The good news is we are very happy to work with unofficial documents so get us whatever you can and even if you can't get a document will try and work with you again we are adjusting to and you know this is something where a year ago would have said no but will try and work with you on this.
All right now uh these are some questions where I'm going to defer to the panel because some of these are very college specific so we get lots of questions about funding so first questions the panel is.
If a student has not yet got funding is it too late to get funding for the fall?
I can speak on behalf of mechanical engineering it is absolutely not too late to get funding I get emails about this all the time my recommendation not know certainly most of the fellowship deadlines have passed so so those opportunities are typically no longer available but certainly contact faculty members we may have faculty members that have received new grants in the last month or so when they may be looking for a student that they weren't expecting to need to fill in the fall so I recommend that you contact faculty members.
But particularly those that work in an area that's of interest to you and see what opportunities they may have an if you're not sure who works in whatever you just contact me and I can point you in the right direction.
Thank you thank you just seem like a consistent good answer for most of the program.
Yes.
OK.
Yes, I I concur with Doctor Shepherd. Aerospace Engineering Waller. Teaching assistantships have been offered for the fall in. Obviously the Graduate Council Fellowship from here is always the possibility of new research that comes in were graduate.
I love the police search assistant and that's where you would look to the specific gravity faculty. And if you're unclear as to who that, maybe you can contact me and I can try to direct you to people in the field that you're interested in.
And not only that something else.
Hold on just a second Andy.
So related to that the next question is if our get funding for this coming year can I defer to next year.
Well.
Let me interject something I just realized something else that's probably a big factor in this we have quite a few not coming through OK we have quite a few new faculty coming in in the fall and those faculty will be looking for students as well in our Department we've got at least 3 new faculty that will be starting.
Here.
All right Steve you're breaking up a little bit on my end here.
Yeah I think what he was saying.
It happened here.
You're good I can see you Viola.
Right thank you.
OK yes I think what a doctor Shepherd was saying is is that we have a number of new faculty will be joining us in the College of engineering he's speaking specifically for mechanical back to the new faculty arriving into fall across the college and so they they would definitely be looking to hire students and they will have the new faculty they normally have at least one or 2 positions to feel for graduate students.
Excellent.
So uh if a student had to defer to next year uh because they can't get funding uh that's usually not a problem is is that seem like something that's OK.
Certainly deferring to the next year is not a problem in terms of the student is admitted for all but did not receive funding. They could defer and then that would put on potentially into the graduate teaching assistant pool for the next year.
OK excellent thank you now the next one is a fairly common question that we get of.
Student you know we encourage students to reach out to faculty about funding do you have any hints for the best way to approach the faculty members how to write that email.
I'll take that.
Yeah I think that's a brilliant advice in my own field I get a lot of emails from perspective students the first question being do you have funding it's always best to start out with.
OK about my research so starting with talking about funding is often a little off putting.
Uh.
And then my recommendation would be any 2 for students not to him I'm not coming through here we go.
All right so next questions really about sort of getting ready to come to you a because we really do hope.
Steve.
All right uh.
Oh I was just gonna say uh don't send a 2 page email with 5 attachment.
With.
When it comes time to getting ready to come to UA I really do hope that you are all here on campus in the fall?
Uh I do want to make sure that you're aware of our getting started page on the UA Graduate School webpage this gives you a lot of information.
There are going to be a number of different orientations that you can attend.
Of.
Question for my engineering colleagues is other engineering specific orientations that they should come to as well.
I know in the Department of aerospace engineering we always have our or departmental orientation.
Yep.
Trying to follow right after the graduate schools orientation. So I think Graduate School usually is that Thursday or Friday time frame before classes start on a Wednesday, so we always did try to followers on that Monday or Tuesday for incoming students, but I will say that graduates go on is important because if you have assistantships or things that I need you to, Graduate School focuses on the bigger picture and in the Department can then focus on the curriculum, the requirements that are necessary to complete the degree.
Yeah at the Graduate School orientation we often get very Department specific questions and that's not the sort of thing we can typically address.

If you are having audio or video issues, make sure you are using Chrome. You may try refreshing the page. If you continue to have issues, don’t sweat it. We will email everyone a link to the recording of the session.
Um.
Another question we had from the attendees is is there a deadline to declare my decision about coming to the University of Alabama so when do you want to know for sure that the student is coming.
Well, if that for instance, is that if if we're talking about time cycle where you were applying for assistantships and fellowships, then we usually need to know that answer by April. So that's kind of already passed for this year. However, if you are self funded or your company's paying for your continuing on to go to Graduate School, then we really don't need to know an answer until if you've already been admitted. We don't in our Department.
We don't need an answer till a couple weeks before hand, and that's just being nice, uh. We've had people that that pretty much enrolled in classes right before hand. If you're getting an assistantship, those deadlines are usually a few months out.
OK excellent thank you.
Yeah and mechanical engineering is consistent with those with those same statements.
Now next question uh you know is obviously for more you know when the student is actually here on campus.
What is the typical duration of a Masters or doctoral program?
Yes yeah.
OK thank you.
Alright so another question uh we had we had this asked a couple of times is How do I know which courses to take and who should I contact about this.
I can jump in on that one. Hopefully y'all are hearing me now and I can't. When I changed, went out and came back in. Y'all were about two slides ahead so I could see why you couldn't hear me awhile ago. Um, in terms of taking classes, I recommend that students consult their faculty advisor.
Um, in terms of the first semester, it's usually not that critical. Take things that you enjoy that fit within the plan of study, but in terms of what classes you're going to be taken to fulfill your your degree program, you definitely did consult with an advisor to get recommendations on what kind of courses would fit in that plan.
If they wanna work.
If they want to wear a food.
If if they are unaware if they're unaware of who they are by boards?
Can I reach out to the grackle?
Can they reach out to yes? Yes, certainly they can contact me and I can. I can tell him who to contact or give him some advice.
All right.
Yeah, the program coordinator usually serves as the first pair of contact for the students, and then what we try to do is at the graduate level, having academic advisors like you had an undergraduate. The research advisor becomes the property warmer that's looking over the students shoulder and making sure that their technical courses so that relationship with your.
Research advisor should also have discussions about what courses that you're taking. Also, all our departments have websites, and if you go on to those apartments, they'll list criteria. Some departments have course rotations and things of that nature, so you can. You can do initial planning, but it is good to consult with the graduate program coordinator, or if you've been assigned a research advisor, you research advisor.
Thank you doctor hub dot Shepherd.
Of.
Another question is Kenneth student take classes outside of their Department that the specific example given was very student who's coming into mechanical engineering and wants to take some metallurgical engineering classes.
That's that's encouraged. Uhm, I think most of the graduate programs are fairly flexible. I know ours is in the airspace engineering now. We don't want somebody we have a 30 hour program. We say 18 hours have to be ATM related, so that leaves 12 hours in. Which are the only thing you do is you want to make sure that that fit. That course is a graduate level course that fit broadly into the curriculum or the program that you're trying to individualize so.
That discussion should be with your research advisor as well.
Alright thank you.
OK.
I lost some making up.
And with regard to the mechanical.
Go ahead, Steve.
I was just gonna say with regard to the mechanical and metallurgical. I mean we have quite a few faculty that actually work in both departments and had students in both Department. So that's a fairly common situation and again it has been stated by several other people on this panel. Just consult with your faculty advisor and particularly for the PhD. Come up with a plan of study.
Thank you so the next question maybe maybe a little less clear cut so the question was.
If uh if this person is a student on campus how many courses can they take the online so for example mechanical and aerospace both have online courses cannon on campus student take a mix of on campus and online courses?
In mechanical engineering that is possible, but usually what we do is we restrict that to the getting the permission from the faculty member that's teaching the class 'cause there are issues with tuition and different sections like like for example an on campus student cannot take a quote distance section of a class, they have to be in a special session section that is set up for online. For on campus students to take an online class and that takes a little bit of.
Coordinating on the Department side so it's not that those classes are typically not listed in the catalog, but if you're in a special situation for some reason you can't make it to campus that semester. Occasionally we have students with conflicts if you work with a faculty advisor, they may be willing to open up a section for you or not allow you in that section.
Don't have anything.
Yeah.
Yeah talk to her anything to add there is that some.
Yeah, it it in. In short, the answer is is depends. Um, the structure of our distant program, which some of you may be interested in. Meaning you'll never set foot on campus in our matters. A real you don't have to.
And those that are taking the Masters on campus. Those are structured differently. Uh, in in college it's the same course. It's the same faculty member to see material, but now it is financially so you can't cross between those. But sometimes we have opened up forces that are online on the campus. And as what Doctor Shepherd was loading too, if there's a case where an individual is a case by case basis for an individual is maybe at work or something and not on campus. And then.
Then exceptions can be made.
Alright thank you thank you now the next question is related to the minimum and maximum number of classes that I can take in each semester now I'll take the first half of this which is you know the Graduate School does have some requirements in terms of minimum number of classes to classified as full-time so if you're on a teaching assistantship that typically is 6 hours.
If you're on a fellowship that is 9 hours, and that's that's the regular full time load.
But I guess you know really some advice that can be given here is what would be the maximum number of classes that you would advise.
Well, and we can interject with that. I mean you say the minimum number of hours that maybe research hours.
2.
The.
I mean, once you once you finish your, you know 48 course hours for the PhD. You're just going to be taking research hours at that point, so the six hours may not necessarily be class hours where you're going to attend a class, and you're going to be putting in just as much effort in mechanical. We typically recommend that you stick around 12 with the maximum. We've probably had some students that have taken 15, but I think 12 is typically recommended is the maximum.
Yeah, if your Masters program in in your question version or you're not doing a thesis, it would generally three or four courses, so that's 912 hours. But if you're doing a master's thesis or dissertation, even though you May.
Power dissipation, how are you making things that become familiar with quitman money how to use specialized codes so that nature and on that case usually students taking about 3 questions?
OK.
There is money is 4.
Alright, thank you, thank you.
All right, uh?
Uh-huh
Absolute.
Call
Tell.
We had.
All right, thank you. Yeah, and that's I know that something that engineering is very, very proud of.
Open.
Viola Acoff
03:33:45 PM
Is someone talking? I cannot hear.
Alright, life outside of class, because sometimes sometimes you're not in your lab or in classroom sometimes.
UH-1 common, a question is about housing. I do want to make sure that you're aware of how off campus housing website that is a good resource.
Also, another good resource is talking to existing students, so they often know where the good places are to live and cheap places are to live. So reaching out to the grad program, directores and finding.
Getting the names of existing students is a good approach.
Now.
Also, we do have some on campus housing for graduate students, but it is fairly pricey. By far the majority of our students live off campus.
Uh, another question and this one. I'm going to pitch out to the panel again. Is the University offer scholarships, internships work? Study, that sort of thing?
Yeah, I think that's all great information, and there's also, you know, as was mentioned earlier, there's fellowship opportunities. But like I said, most of those for the upcoming year past.
But if you're not starting till later, or even once you already get here, there's the Graduate School is extremely good about they have a great internal fellowship program which is very strong and we're proud of that. So there are opportunities for current students to get you a fellowships, not a whole lot, but there are some opportunities. And then there's there's other fellowships, like space grant fellowships. What else? There's NSF DOD fellowships? Now those are all external to the University. I guess this question is more related, specifically the University, so that would be more the.
Fellowships for current students.
Brittany Richardson
03:38:14 PM
Andy, I think you are muted.
Did it?
OK, I'm sorry.
I actually I actually had myself muted, uh, to try and win.
Yeah.
That's why I went out and came back. I thought something was wrong.
So first question is here, are their research collaborations with other universities is almost specifically European universities, but.
You know, do we have big projects with other universities?
Problem.
Heads up on the faculty are there. Either Sherry is weather glad we are within the copper number of collaborations. University roster.
Girls.
Alright, thank you. Thank you um next couple of questions really talk to you know international students or this could be domestic students adapting to life in the US so I can speak to this a little bit.
Not mean for international students when they come to the US, there is a difference in education style, a difference in teaching style.
Uh, if you are going to be a teaching assistant, we do actually have a specific program to help with some of those transitions and scored our international teaching assistant program, which does actually talk about some of the cultural differences. But we find that most of our students really adapt very well to the US.
And then, uh, adjust is tuscalusa in general, uh, as you may guess from my accent, I'm actually not from not from Alabama. Not really from the US either, so I can talk to that a little bit. We do actually have a fairly significant international student and international faculty and staff population. When you come to the College of engineering, you're going to see that there are lot of faculty, a lot of students from all over the world.
Uh, so we do pride ourselves on the international feeling of the campus.
We do encourage our students to really embrace life on campus. There's a lot going on campus.
Uh, a lot of student clubs. We've got about 550 student clubs, so there's pretty much something for everyone, so get involved.
Also we have football on our campus and we really hope that comes back in the fall.
But for international students embracing Fallin, gays embracing what we call tailgating, I think is amazing. I'm really not that much into football, but I really am into tailgating so you know that it's it's a carnival like atmosphere on campus. During the football games. So a lot going on.
And you know, Andy all duck tail on that one thing. I was surprised by when I came and started working in Alabama is the international culture here and the student organizations and the student groups that have celebrations that are, you know, it might be part of what they have at their native country. And when I was in college, I never witnessed that where I went. But it seems like it, Alabama. There's a lot of that there.
Is that they have the? You know the people get together to celebrate their culture to meet with other people from their culture and they can talk about things and share some of their. You know, some of the things they're going through. Is there adjusting to life in the US?
Yeah, I know some of the Indian festivals. We've really embraced some of those and made them out and yeah.
Let's see, I'm going to open the, uh, open the panel. 2 questions from the audience. I've had a couple of questions coming in which I'm going to release to the panel.
Ebrahim H.
03:43:02 PM
Is it possible for new Phd students to start the Fall 2020 semester online?
Uh.
And this one question I just released is let me see it, make make sure it came through. Is it possible for PhD students to start this semester online if we are teaching classes online in the fall?
That's if they can't make it here because of the COVID-19 crisis.
From a gradual perspective, that's were OK with that panel.
And for mechanical engineering perspective were OK. But I mean, if we're if we're still online to me, that means anybody that's online. It's no different than being on campus. I mean, that's just an alternate operational mode, and everything continues as normal.
Alright, a little we got here.
Maria L.
03:43:53 PM
Can I start the research with the required courses?
All right, so the one I just released a.
Can I start research with the required courses and I think what Maria here is trying to say is can while she's taking her first semester with the courses that are required of her for her program, can she start research at the same time?
I.
The answer the answer is yes you can, and that's usually encouraged. Her subtle aspect there's. There's what we call. For instance, if you're in a PhD program, dissertation hours, and really dissertation hours should be scheduled on the back end because of various reasons. If you start dissertation hours, you're supposed to keep on taking the shower. So if a student wants to come in our program and that students working with professor Roy and Professor Roy has research grants.
Paul Samuel K.
03:44:50 PM
All embassies are locked down so what to do ?
Lauren W.
03:44:53 PM
If the semester has to be online for the fall, how will the research be affected and affect PhD student's time line
But the students going to work on what that student may be doing is one in the research on the side. But two, there's are no structures. We special topics that are related to literature or learning how to use the equipment. And then you can take our that way. So in short, the answer is yes, there are some details that we have to take care of our in though.
And I think that really answers another question that came in from Lauren. So how how will research be affected if classes are online?
Again, what all learning new techniques for learning to be flexible?
Uh, another question that came in, uh?
All embassies are locked down. Obviously this is for international students, so you know what? What do international students do in this situation where they can't?
Process that visa application so this is a question that we are getting many, many times a day in the Graduate School and really our advice is to make sure that you have all documentation necessary for that visa so that when the embassy does open up.
You are ready to apply for the visa. I'm really in that situation. We hope that you can get the visa in time.
Uh.
Embassies have been affected in different ways of round the world. By this we have heard some rumors that some embassies in China a starting to reopen for visa applications.
What's the?
We have not heard confirmation of that yet. I'm sort of very curious of those room rumors.
But really, just being ready to go with that visa application as soon as I Embassy Opens.
As a group of five people here, we have a lot of power on campus, but we have no power whatsoever over the USA embassy, so I'm afraid to say that is beyond our control.
Uh, let's see.
Hossein A.
03:46:59 PM
what would happens if a phd student couldn't find a supervisor. I am just waiting to find a funding source
All right, another question just came in.
What would happen if a PhD student can't find his supervisor?
So this person is wanting to find a funding source any advice there.
Well.
Well, you need to find a PhD advisor for sure. I mean that that's going to be the person that directs your your research, and that's essential.
You know my recommendation is is if you.
You know, if you looked and looked and looked in an area that you're interested in and you just can't find anything, maybe it's time to branch out a little bit and see if you can't, you know, look, open up your opportunities a little bit and talk to other faculty members.
Hum.
But but I mean, I don't. I don't know of any PhD students in our program that don't have an advisor.
Maria L.
03:48:02 PM
I did not heard the answer for my question: Can I do the research phd program with the other cor required courses.
Yet the student is talking about the application process. Then one of the things that we do when we evaluate applications is is there a potential good match? We are hesitant to to admit if we don't think that there's potentially good match or or potential later on down the road. If you're talking about or you applied, that's where the conversation needs to be made.
This doctor good living in very specific calm conversations emails with potential faculty members. If you're already on campus in as doctor Shepherd said you would, you would already be assigned an advisor. Now that's that's more of a PC. Focus on the Masters program. You could be involved in that you can be pursuing that without doing much research at all. You can be on professional track it be taking your courses to fill the program firemint.
Thank you, thank you.
Andrew Goodliffe
03:48:55 PM
Maria - can you clarify this question
We had a question come in from Maria and I'm just going to see if she can clarify that question because I thought we would address at one, but I don't think we.
Noah H.
03:49:22 PM
Could you discuss the difference between Special Problems courses and regular courses?
Lauren W.
03:49:26 PM
Could you touch on the mentorship part again? It was muted when it was covered
Manage to answer what she was trying to ask.
Did you answer the question? Andy? I think she just chimed in again. I don't know. She heard your response. I didn't hear what you said.
So Maria, if you can, uh, respond to my question there that I'd appreciate it.
All right, in the meantime, another question come in from Lauren.
Uh.
Check.
Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. So um, it seems that Maria, uh, how question about research PhD program with other cool required courses?
Was not answered so.
I'm just.
Let me let me try take a stab at it. If you're a new patient student.
Masters degree your model. Lucky you're here at least is completing bore mean research lab.
I will get you involved with the research lab. So first year on campus is gonna predominantly a quarter or related. Try to complete those requirements and you would be ease into the research environment so as it relates to Kobe Naive.
It's really not setting the income statement saying that is it's it's so I have all pieces and would lobby in the research lab right now but were prevented until we're looking at other ways or wagon report for writing papers and things of that nature until we can get back into it. So I don't think the course research is an issue for incoming students. This all because the course work requirements are going to be more important. Does it mean you can't start?
Being engaged in the faculty members research environment is just a slower process.
Thank you doctor Huebner.
Uh, no a if you can hear Maine. Uh, no. I had a question about discussing the differences between special problems courses an regular courses.
I can take that, at least from the mechanical engineering perspective mean we have faculty that conduct research in certain areas, an occasionally they'll want to introduce a special topics course, which is of course that's not in the current catalog.
And so they might do a course on, uh, you know, advanced machine learning or advanced controls or something like that. And so they will have a special topics course that they will teach and then usually we asked the second time 80 cat chords that they put it in the catalog.
I'm
I'll also mention agree with our Shepherd that if it supposed like intermediate fluid mechanics, we teach that every two years that has horse number, there's certain rotate win, so it's an catalog. But there be a new research direction, but one of the steps required for the.

Will I have an opportunity to partner with another school for the research?
A mastery if you're doing the non thesis option is all culminating experience that is University wide, no matter what program you when you have to do a culminating.

What about trump suspending all visas does it effect student visa as well ? Pls advice
When is generic, actually some type of introduction to research? We've had a couple orders in an area that you like to faculty member and you define the problems with work on and one of the things that you can do is you can take 3 hours of problems or so.

we wil be wrapping up in 5 minutes
Torture 30 will allow. You will check homemade serious, so that's another way that that so it's a catch all for it all out to implement new material or.
After culminating experience, things of that nature.
Right this one question that just came in that I wanted to address quickly from wholesale. OK, the question was about trump suspending all visas. Does it affect student visas as well?
Uh, the good news if we can extract some good news from this is that president Trump's latest announcement does not affect student, does it only affects green cards or permanent resident visas? So for international students on this call.
Your visa will not be affected by that.
Uh.
Maria was asking about opportunities to partner with another school for research, so I think Doctor Fridley address this a little bit earlier that collaborations with other universities so that opportunity does exist. Does anyone want to add anything to that?
I would say one of the things that are University has is less far centers. Also remote sensing or centers that related to traffic.

I have had to defer to fall, due to lack of fundings.... i started researching in portugal at The university of coimbra and now seeking to still do a research study at the university of Alabama... is this possible given that I have a positive admission status for the UA already and now have started a research in Indoor environmental Quality under the Energy for sustainability program in mechanical engineering (Phd) .... is there some room to get a chance still for UA
Cat, such indoors generally have 1/4 each, so faculty or affiliated with the center may have broader reach with believe. There are other universities because they go after very large research grants that are opt into five years are in multi $1,000,000 so those are not come just one University that come to multiple and see if that is a specific area that you would like to have. Expansive you have that opportunity to work within universities that I would want to.
Look at sitting on the.
Not time universities.

John - this is a question that is probably department specific - please email your director
Alright, so.
It.
I'm just saying if there any other questions from the audience, I think we've addressed most of these now I do want to.
Ooh Aah, I thought I had a slide at the end with program director contact information. I apologize for that.
And.
Of what I will do is I will forward program direct information to all the participants in the school after this, after this session is over so that you do have that contact information. But as we stated a few times here is very important to stay in contact with your program director and really, that's a good person to address. A lot of Russians.
Thank you.
Alright, I do want to wrap up now. I do want to thank our panel members after taking a time out of Friday afternoon to take part in this. I think it's been very, very useful. You have given some great answers to questions. I do apologize for some of the sound and video issues. I'm not quite sure what's happening today. I think a lot of people are using the Internet right now.
But the big thing is we do look forward to seeing you on campus and one very important thing you have to learn when you come to the University of Alabama is how to see a very key phrase and that is Volt I'd.
Roll Tide.
So thank you everyone.
Find Rhode Island.
Bye bye.
Bye bye.
